During the press release for Imm Cologne 2007, Dirk-Uwe Klaas, general manager of the German Furniture Industry Association, analysed the sector situation in Germany which in 2005 achieved 17.2 billion euros turnover with 105,000 operators in 1,125 companies.
German furniture market is the most important in Europe: each year household market registers in average 500 euros expenditure per person, 360 of which for furniture. The growth in 2005 turnover compared with the precedent year was +1.9%; the positive trend was confirmed in the first semester of 2006 with +7.7% compared with the same period of last year.
The strong foreign demand has helped the positive development of the German office furniture industry achieving a growth ratio in the first quarter 2006 of + 14.1%. The foreign trade gap registered a slow down: surplus in imports is -15.2%. In the whole 64% of furniture export is towards EU Countries , a market where new member Countries are becoming increasingly important.
